De Wells à Welles : panique aux USA !!!

Journaliste, sociologue et romancier britannique, maître du récit de science-fiction et d'anticipation, H.G. Wells naquit en 1866 à Bromley, dans un milieu modeste. À l'âge de quatorze ans, la nécessité le poussa à devenir apprenti drapier avec ses frères, le commerce de son père étant tombé en faillite. Parallèlement, il s'intéressa à la littérature en autodidacte. En 1884, il obtint une bourse et se mit à l'étude de la biologie à l'université de Londres, sous la direction du physiologiste T.H. Huxley, ami de Darwin. Trois ans plus tard, sans avoir obtenu de diplôme, il mit fin à ses études de biologie puis obtint des charges d'enseignant dans des collèges privés. En 1891, il s'installa à Londres et se maria. En 1895, il publia son premier roman, La machine à explorer le temps, qui remporta un succès immédiat. Deux ans plus tard, il donna au monde l'un des plus grands romans de science-fiction jamais écrit, L'homme invisible, un drame faustien enlevant. Dès 1903, Wells se fit le propagateur d'un socialisme «occidental» bien distinct du communisme soviétique. Ses idées sur la science, la politique et l'histoire l'engagèrent dans des polémiques avec Hilaire Belloc et Bernard Shaw. En 1905, avec la parution du roman Kipps, il acquit le statut d' «écrivain sérieux». Pourtant, le succès phénoménal de ses histoires de science-fiction obscurcit le rayonnement de ses autres écrits: Wells lui-même se plaignit du fait qu'on ne s'intéressait qu'à ses romans de science-fiction. En 1917, il devint membre du Comité de recherche de la Société des Nations et, après la Première Guerre mondiale, il publia une série d'essais, dont Esquisse de l'histoire universelle et la trilogie La science et la vie (rédigée en collaboration avec Sir Julian Huxley), dans laquelle il prenait position en faveur de l'instauration d'un État mondial. Sa rencontre avec Staline, en 1934, lui fit perdre toutes ses illusions quant à l'édification d'un monde socialiste. H.G. Wells s'éteignit le 13 août 1946. | ||||||||||
